Red wine stains can be about as stubborn as they come. How to get red wine out of carpet can become a difficult and arduous task. We can show how you can do that with simple household items.

How to Remove Red Wine Stains From Carpet

Act quickly to remove the red wine

The most important thing you need to do is to think fast and act immediately. The sooner you can get to the spill, the better chances of cleaning it. The reasoning for this is pretty simple and straightforward. The sooner you can clean up, the less time the spill has to set and create a stain. It can understandably be hard to do so. Often a spill can occur during a gathering, when it is hard to get to cleaning. However, the sooner you get to the spill, the easier it is to clean.

Soak up excess red wine

Once you actually start the cleaning, the process can be pretty simple. Your first step is to soak up the excess wine. Some of it will have already begun to absorb by the time you get to the spill. Your first focus needs to be on preventing any more damage by cleaning up the rest of the red wine.

Use paper towels or cloth to gently soak up the spill. Do not try to scrub at it at all, that will most likely make things worse. Simply place the cloth over the spill and let it absorb all the red wine. Try not to press down on it, as that too can cause the carpet to absorb it. You want to make sure to limit the damage as much as possible. Time is of the essence, so move quickly.

Blot the red wine stain Immediately

Now we get to the actual stain. Your go-to method here is to blot it immediately and as well as you can. Your first instinct may actually be to scrub the stain out. However, that pressure can actually make the stain seep deeper into the carpet. The friction created by the scrubbing can also make the stain bond with the carpet. A good blot can actually be a pretty effective stain removing technique.

Blotting can work well even with just a little bit of water. Your best bet is to start blotting from the outside and work your way in. This prevents the stain from spreading further out while you blot. Try not to use too much water as that can also do more harm than good. A few drops can easily do the trick.

You can also use a few drops of cold water over the now-cleaned stain. This can help you see if there’s anything remaining that still needs cleaning. In that case, simply repeat the blotting process until all of the red wine is taken care of. Again, remember to use water in very moderate quantities. With more stubborn stains, however, water alone may not do the trick. In that case, there are a bunch of other around-the-house items you can use.

Different methods to remove red wine stains

In ideal cases, blotting should be enough to get rid of the stain. When that doesn’t work, some other methods can be tried. Remember to attempt to remove the stain by blotting before moving on to these techniques.

Using Salt to remove red wine

Once you have blotted the stain as well as you can, try this technique. While the blot can take out most of the stain, the more stubborn parts tend to remain. A good hack is to use a bit of salt over the remaining red wine stain. This method must be used on a damp surface.

Simply spread some salt over the wet stain. The method is pretty simple to work. The salt bonds with the dampness of the stain. It then begins to absorb the stain as it dries up. It’s a pretty efficient way of cleaning up the mess without the risk of making it worse. Once the salt has completely dried, you can simply vacuum it up.

Baking Soda to remove red wine

Blotting is not a one-off stop. The process often needs to be repeated until you’re sure no more of the stain will come out. Once you have reached that point, you can try baking soda for the remaining stain. It requires a mixture of one part water and three parts baking soda.

The soda works in a similar manner to salt. As the mixture dries, it soaks up the stain with it. Simply apply it to the affected area and allow it to dry. Once it has, you can vacuum up the remains.

Using vinegar to remove red wine

To use vinegar for a stain, you have to prepare a solution. A tablespoon of vinegar into a cup of warm water can usually do the trick. For more resolute stains, you can also add a tablespoon of dish-washing soap.

Remember to blot the stain as well as you can before trying this method. Use a plain white cloth or paper towel, and the solution to continue blotting. Make use of small pours at a time on the stain. Continue blotting until the stain is completely removed.

Using fizzy water (carbonated water)

Fizzy water is a popular choice in stain removal. It works pretty well in targeting and removing all kinds of stains, including red wine. The process of club soda removal is pretty simple.

Once the stain has been dry blotted, introduce the club soda. Use very moderate amounts of soda on the spill. Continue to blot and repeat the process until the stain is gone. Always remember to test a bit of your cleaning solution on a section of the carpet.
